FIPFA Powerchair Football World Cup 2022 Media Launch – ‘Football for All’

The FIPFA Powerchair Football World Cup 2022 was launched today, April 29, 2021 at Bankwest Stadium in Parramatta, NSW. The tournament will take place in October 2022, at Sydney Olympic Park’s Quaycentre.  The tournament logo was officially revealed at the ceremony by Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC QC, Governor of New South Wales.

Powerchair football, a modified version of football (soccer) for powerchair users is played in over 30 countries using specially modified powerchairs and an oversized football. Two teams of 4 pass, shoot and spin-kick in this fast-paced and highly tactical game, showing off the skills of some incredible athletes in an indoor arena. Australia’s national team, the Poweroos, will challenge defending champions France, two-time champions the USA, England, Denmark, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Argentina, Uruguay and Japan for the title of world power chair football champions. This will be the 4th FIPFA World Cup.

Dr Andy Harper, Chair of the Local Organising Committee, said: “On behalf of the organising committee, welcome to everyone as we prepare for the FIFPA World Cup 2022. Powerchair football is an exciting spectacle and the powerchair footballers are as committed to their sport and the pursuit of excellence as any. We know the players will compete hard for the honour of being crowned world champions. Our aim at the LOC is to provide the players and their support and care networks the best experience possible. We will be working tirelessly to ensure that ‘football for all’ is a meaningful rallying cry for greater inclusiveness. We know that the Australian football and sporting community will embrace their Poweroos, and all the competing nations, for the world cup next year.”

The Poweroos are excited for the chance to prove themselves against the world’s best and will be more determined than ever to win on home soil.”
